Our Courses Save Lives

In the event of an emergency or disaster, it’s well-documented that humans will, without thinking, risk their own lives to save their pets or livestock. When individuals refuse to evacuate or re-enter evacuation zones, they not only risk their own lives, but they also increase the risk of injury or death for all emergency responders.

BART’s courses were designed and developed to address this problem. First Responders, who have had Basic Animal Rescue Training, minimize the risk of injury to themselves and to those who may have otherwise put themselves in harm’s way. This is only possible when responders have the equipment and training, and the confidence to use them. This is exactly what BART provides.

BART training is for First Responders such as Police, Fire, CERT Teams, etc.  We are currently active in Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Oklahoma.

  • The First Responder Small Animal Preparedness, Safety and Response course will teach you how to work with small domestic pets in emergency and disaster situations.

    • DHS Minnesota state-approved course (course # 080122-01, course label is MN-003-RESP, Basic Animal Rescue Training)
    • 50% of the 3 hour course directly addresses emergency planning, preparedness and first responder (and public) safety when dealing with companion animals (pets) encountered on-scene of an emergency or disaster
    • 50% of the 3 hour course is devoted to the human equivalent of what a first responder is required to know for human patient assessment, first aid and CPR on-scene, and is included in the course in the event that the incident commander feels that he/she has the resources to commit to such an effort – with a understanding of the tremendous public relations impact such efforts carry
    • Course instructors are professionals within the veterinary profession
    • The 3 hour course is comprised of 4 modules, 3 of which are hands-on with live dogs, and includes a 15 minute pre-test and a 15 minute post test
